DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 12 Jul) – Suspected communist insurgents seized a village chieftain and his son, accused of murdering seven civilians, in the southern Philippines, police said Thursday.

Police said some 30 heavily armed New People’s Army members stormed the house of the official and seized him, including his son who rushed to aid his father, in the village of Manuel Peralta in Davao del Sur’s Malita town early this week.

The insurgents accused the duo as behind the killing of 7 people. The accusations against the two men could not be independently confirmed.

The raiders also took several weapons from the house, police said.

Police said the raiders belong to the NPA’s Front Committee 71. The fate of the two victims is still unknown, but police said security forces were searching for the hostages.

The NPA, which is fighting for a Maoist state in the Philippines, previously abducted and killed civilians suspected as military spy and abusive government officials and soldiers. (Romy Bwaga)
