COTABATO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 05 Aug) – Security forces on Sunday remained in heightened alert as troops and policemen search for terrorists who bombed a provincial bus depot in the southern Philippines.

One person was killed in the attack and about a dozen more injured when two bombs exploded Friday in Koronadal City in South Cotabato province.

No group claimed responsibility for the twin bombings, but authorities were quick to blame the country’s largest Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which is currently negotiating peace with Manila.

The MILF has denied any involvement in the attacks. Several buses and depots have been bombed in the past that killed and wounded dozens of people in the troubled southern region.

Security forces also seized a cargo of Penta Erythritol Tetra Nitrate (PETN), an explosive powder and some 23,000 blasting caps in the southern port city of Zamboanga.

“The shipment came from Manila and we are tracking down the owner of these chemical and blasting caps,” Chief Inspector Francisco Clavecillas, the port police commander, told the Mindanao Examiner.

The chemical can be used in manufacturing homemade bombs. (Juan Magtanggol)
