ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Oct. 22, 2007) – Government soldiers killed a pirate in a clash on a remote southern Philippine province of Tawi-Tawi, officials said on Monday.

Officials said troops raided a hideout of suspected pirates in the village of Batu Pantan in Lagayas town, sparking a firefight that killed one gunman.

“One pirate was killed in the fighting and none on our side,” said Army Maj. Eugene Batara, spokesman for the Western Mindanao Command.

He said soldiers also recovered two speedboats called “jungkong,” which is typically used in Sabah.

Batara did not say if the gunmen were allied with the Abu Sayyaf or not, but the military said pirates have been victimizing fishermen in the province. (Mindanao Examiner)
