ILIGAN CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Mar. 22, 2008) – Philippine military agents have allegedly harassed and tailed journalists and members of Muslim organizations who covered a meeting of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in Lanao del Sur province.

The MILF said it received the disturbing reports and implicated the government agents. It said journalists were not spared and that the incident had sent a chilling warning that the military is involved in spying the media and non-government organizations.

Dozens of journalists and NGO representatives had attended the three-day meeting in Butig town early this month. The MILF received the reports after journalists and NGO members complained to the rebel group about the incident.

It was unknown whether the government agents had penetrated the huge crowd that gathered in Butig town. The meeting, attended by rebel chieftain Murad Ebrahim and senior MILF leaders, discussed the slow progress of the peace talks with Manila. The MILF, the country’s largest Muslim rebel group, is currently negotiating peace with the Arroyo government.
